An Academic conference focused on the relationship between ancient magic and religion, their eventual opposition, and the social issues implied by this phenomenon, such as construction of identity, social inclusion and exclusion, condemn and removal of certain members of the community labeled as “sorcerers” or “witches”. A special focus will be on the ancient approaches to these problems with respect to the strategies applied in our post-modern Europe. The conference will involve, of course, the University of Freiburg and the University of Verona, the main Hochschulpartner, along with scholars coming from a number of further German, Italian and Spanish institutions.
